The Moine Thrust Controversy

I had an enjoyable evening last Saturday at the East Midlands Geological Society presenting my talk on the Moine Thrust Controversy.

My view is that Murchison’s conformable hypothesis was the best explanation at the time and provided a testable scientific hypothesis. Nichol, regarded by history as the good guy whose correct views were oppressed by the well-connected Murchsion, simply presented a series of observations against Murchison but never grasped the real problem.

The main issue was that our understanding of geological science at the time needed a major upgrade before Murchison’s hypothesis could be properly tested.
